But this company had been testing some AI-powered analytics tools. The analyst just typed that exact question into the system. Thirty seconds later, they had their answer. Complete with charts, statistical analysis, actionable insights.

This moment hit me because it wasn’t just faster. It was fundamentally different. The gap between having a business question and getting a reliable answer just collapsed.

We’re not talking about incremental improvements here. This feels like one of those shifts — like when spreadsheets first showed up and suddenly everyone could do financial modeling. Or when the internet made research something you could do from your desk instead of spending weekends at the library.

This process works, but it’s slow. Data professionals spend a lot of time on preparation, quality checks, and back-and-forth clarification. Research shows about 73% of business data sits unused [1] — not because it’s not valuable, but because turning it into insights takes too long and requires too much specialized knowledge.

The Knowledge Bottleneck

Our current setup creates this weird situation where accessing insights requires specific technical skills. Business professionals who understand customer behaviour, market dynamics, operational nuances — they can’t directly explore their own hypotheses because of technical barriers.

This creates a dependency where business insight and technical capability stay separated. It slows down discovery and limits the kind of analysis that combines domain expertise with data exploration.

What’s Actually Changing with Generative AI

Before we dive into what’s coming, let’s be honest about where we are right now. If you’ve tried the current “AI” features in Power BI, Snowflake, or Tableau, you might be thinking “this is what all the hype is about?”

I get it. Power BI’s Copilot gives you basic chart suggestions. Snowflake’s Copilot helps write SQL queries. Tableau’s Ask Data works okay if your data is perfectly clean and your question is simple. These are useful, but they’re not the transformation I’m talking about.

Current Copilots vs. What’s Actually Coming

Here’ the thing — what we have now are basically smart auto-complete tools. They’re helpful, but they’re not fundamentally changing how we work with data. The real transformation is happening in labs and early-stage implementations that most people haven’t seen yet.

Let me give you some concrete examples of what’s already happening beyond the basic copilots. These aren’t theoretical — they’re systems people are using right now.

SAP Joule is probably one of the better examples of where this is heading. Announced in September 2023 [6], unlike basic copilots that work within single tools, Joule understands business context across SAP’s entire ecosystem. You can ask it something like “Why did our procurement costs spike last quarter?” and it will pull data from multiple SAP modules — Finance, Supply Chain, HR — to give you a comprehensive answer with specific recommendations.

Microsoft Fabric is another example where you can see the future emerging. Their Copilot, now generally available [7], can automatically detect patterns across different data sources, generate insights you didn’t ask for, and explain complex relationships in plain English.
